Did I see that that $200,000 house has taxes of over $3000 a year?  I thought AK was a low tax state, lol.  I also thought with so much land and lumber up there, prices would be a lot lower.  Why are houses so expensive there?

Hello Brian. The reason homes in ANchorage are so expensive is because Anchorage has been built out to almost its capacity. There's not much more land in Anchorage that can be built on.  The other reason being the population boom and there you go,  Supply vs. Demand.

The property taxes in the Municipality of Anchorage, keep in mind they are vary with each county, I would say is average. It's much lower than the taxes in Rockford, Illinois, which is where I am from. Over there, my mother in law's house is worth $189,000 and her property taxes are almost $6000 per year. With that foreclosure, I'm sure that the tax assessed value of the property is much higher than the $200,000.  This can be looked up at muni.org/treasury

In Alaska, the taxes are fairly low when compared to the rest of the United STates because we don't have an income tax and in a lot of the towns, such as Anchorage, we don't have a sales tax either.

Seems like a great place to live.  I have always wanted to visit, but every time I try to book a flight all the moose hunters have the seats reserved.  Well, maybe someday.  When you say they are out of room, do you mean there are natural boundaries that limit growth, mountains etc.?

Hi Brian,

It is a great place to live.  You should come visit. There are so many things to do here.  You are right about the flights. Flights from travel daily and those are always booked to the max! When I say no room, I mean a lot of the land is federally owned and reserved as a wildlife reserve.  Did you know that the size of Alaska's wild, naturalish land, is the same size as all of America's wild reserve put together?
